  50. We'll, iv'e done it with just those items. get a copper reducer, and saw 
  51. cut some notches in it so it can be clamped down. Strip the cable so 
  52. there is enough center conducter sticking out to fit into the barrel.Put 
  53. the barrel in one end of the fitting, and the cable in the other. Use 
  54. small hose clamps to tighten everything down. If it's going to be 
  55. outside, weatherproof the hell out of it. It ai'nt pretty but if done 
  56. carefully, it works.

  91. IARU Appoints Satellite Adviser
  92.  
  93. In a news release dated 26-SEP-94, the International Amateur Radio Union
  94. (IARU) announced that it has appointed Hans van de Groenendaal (ZS5AKV) to
  95. the newly created post of IARU Satellite Adviser.  According to the IARU
  96. release, the principle task of this position will be to keep the IARU
  97. Administrative Council informed on all technical and operational aspects of
  98. the Amateur Radio Satellite Service in order to enable the Council to adopt 
  99. appropriate policies to advance the interest of the Amateur Satellite Service 
  100. before the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and regional telecom-
  101. munications agencies.
  102.  
  103. The IARU release noted that ZS5AKV, as past President of Southern African
  104. AMSAT and an Executive Committee member of IARU Region 1, brings many years
  105. of satellite related experience to this appointment.  The IARU release
  106. further noted that the appointment is a direct result of recommendations
  107. made to the IARU Administrative Council by the IARU Ad Hoc Satellite
  108. Advisory Committee which took up the interim report at the recently com-
  109. pleted IARU Administrative Committee meeting in Singapore.  The IARU
  110. release commented that this action is "tangible proof" of IARU's interest
  111. and involvement in the Amateur Satellite Service.
  112.  
  113. The release continued by citing IARU's many year role in protecting the
  114. Amateur Satellite Service, in particular its work during the 1979 World
  115. Administrative Radio Conference which led to most of the present Amateur
  116. Satellite Service frequency allocations.
  117.  
  118. The IARU release also stated that the "exponential development of new tech-
  119. nologies and ever increasing complexity of the Regulatory Agencies, the IARU
  120. Administrative Council deemed it necessary to involve itself closer with the
  121. Amateur Satellite Service in order to represent it effectively on a coordin-
  122. ated world-wide basis while cementing its relationship with the AMSAT and
  123. other Amateur Radio Satellite groups."

  125. In the release the IARU said that in his new capacity and by the powers
  126. delegated to him by the IARU, ZS5AKV will have the task of appointing
  127. someone to the post of IARU Satellite Frequency Coordinator.
  128.  
  129. The IARU said that ZS5AKV is now soliciting nominations for volunteers
  130. willing to serve the function of IARU Satellite Frequency Coordinator.
  131. Such nominations should be sent to him by FAX at +27-31-765-6456 or via
  132. INTERNET at amsat@uctvax.uct.ac.za before 31-OCT-94.  Hans said that each
  133. nomination should include a comprehensive summary of the nominee's background 
  134. and qualifications.  He stated that it is his intention to discuss the various
  135. nominations with major AMSAT groups in order to seek their recommendations.
  136. He underscored the importance of finding the right person to be appointed
  137. to this very important job.

  167. FO-20: FO-20 has been switched back into the analog mode as of 14:30 UTC
  168. 28-SEP-94.  The command station announced that "mailbox software ran away"
  169. and there is a malfunction known as UVC (Under Voltage Control) has been
  170. confirmed by command station.  FO-20 will be staying in its analog mode
  171. until 10-OCT-94. [JJ1WTK]

  173. MIR: German Astronaut Dr. Ulf Merbold will be QRV aboard the space station
  174. MIR signing DP3MIR during the ESA EUROMIR 94 mission starting 03-OCT-1994.
  175. In order to give actual information regarding the mission to as many radio
  176. amateurs and SWLs as possible, he will use the digital voice memory of MIR's
  177. HAM RADIO rig designed and built by Thomas Kieselbach (DL2MDE). Thomas made
  178. an arrangement with Ulf Merbold, DP3MIR, to load actual spoken reports into 
  179. the digital memory frequently, as time permits however, probably every 2-3 
  180. days. The reports in English and German will then be retransmitted auto-
  181. matically during the consecutive orbits at 145.550 Mhz (FM) in regular time
  182. intervals.  Ulf Merbold will stay aboard MIR for 30 days.  [DF5DP]

  184. RS-10: WA6ARA reports that RS-10 is operating well with a good mix of SSB
  185. and CW.  Orbit times are great for late evenings to the East and with early
  186. evening passes to the West.  [WA6ARA]

  189. starting to appear in late evenings.  Over the next month the passes will

  258.     I started out in Satellites (RS 10) with a Yaesu FT101E, a FT221 
  259. 2 meter all mode and a Hamtronics Downconverter to bring 440 to 10m 
  260. to the Yaesu. The converter was relatively easy to construct, and 
  261. worked well for satellites.  Good luck!

  376. Southeastern Cluster Group worked him around 0330Z on October 1st on
  377. 7028 khz. His signal was reported to be good, and he called several 
  378. in the pileup by name, indicating that his computer logging still works.

  380. C6A, BAHAMAS. Walt/G3NYY, Tim/G4VXE and Dave/WG3I will be active from
  381. Nassau, New Providence Island between December 10 and December 18, 1994.
  382. Operation will be on 160-10m including the WARC bands and will be mainly
  383. on CW, with some SSB. Calls will be C6A/home call. QSL via home call,
  384. direct or via bureau.

  386. ET, ETHIOPIA. ET3BT has been showing up on the 14226 DX Net almost every
  387. day. Look for ET3BT between 1800 and 2230z.

  389. FJ, ST. BARTHELEMY. Stefen/AA2SZ, Charles/N2HIG, Howard/K2MME, Bob/N0IMH,
  390. Laurent/F6GOX and Adolphe/FJ5AB will be operating in the CQ WW DX SSB
  391. Contest as a Multi/Multi entry signing FJ5AB. The group will be there 
  392. from October 26th through November 3rd, and also operate before and after
  393. the contest using FJ/homecalls on all bands, CW, SSB and RTTY.

  395. FM, MARTINIQUE. Doug, N3ADL, will be operating from here October 26th 
  396. through November 2nd (plus take part in CQWW DX SSB Contest), using the
  397. special callsign of TO5MM. Expect SSB, RTTY and possible satellite
  398. operations. Activity will be on all bands 160-10 meters. QSL via CBA,
  399. enclosing SASE etc.

  401. FO, FRENCH POLYNESIA. John, K1VWL, will be active from Moorea Island
  402. (IOTA OC-046), November 22nd through December 3rd. There was no mention
  403. of what his callsign will be, but he plans to be active in the CQWW DX CW
  404. Contest (Nov. 26-27). Outside the contest, he plans to be active on 1832,
  405. 3523, 7023 and 10103 kHz. QSL via his CBA.

  407. GU, GUERNSEY. F6FGN and F5SHQ will be active from October 28th to November
  408. 4th. Both operators will sign GU/callsign and be active in the CQWW DX SSB
  409. Contest. Activity will be on 80-10 meters CW/SSB. QSL to: P.O. BOX 14,
  410. 44521 Oudon, France.
  411.  
  412. OT, BELGIUM. Look for OT4T as a Multi/Single entry in the upcoming CQWW
  413. SSB Contest. The following operators will be operating from ON4UN's QTH: 
  414. ON4WW, ON4UN, DL1SBR, DJ4AX, DL5XX, DK1FW and ON6TT (assisted by a vast
  415. group of spotters). Unfortunately, F6EXV, who helped this group of 
  416. operators to be #1 in Europe as Multi/Single entry last year, is still
  417. in Africa and unable to join them this year. To receive a multi-colored
  418. QSL card, QSL via ON4UN.
  419.  
  420. PACIFIC DXPEDITION/HOLIDAY DELAYED AGAIN. Masa, JE1DXC (A35XC), is still
  421. having problems with airplane reservations which continues to delay his
  422. departure for 3D2, T30, and T2. He plans to be active from the Pacific
  423. for the CQWW DX SSB Contest.
  424.  
  425. SV/A, MT. ATHOS. The Tokyo Packet Cluster reports Monk Apollo, SV2ASP/A
  426. seems to be pretty active on RTTY. They also report his signal was not
  427. very strong but fair via the long path. Look for him around 14083 kHz
  428. between 7000 and 7030z.
  429.  
  430. V4, ST. KITTS. The North Alabama DX Club will operate from St. Kitts
  431. in the CQWW SSB Contest in the multi-single category. The group will be
  432. signing V47WK and will be active from October 25 until November 1. 
  433. Activity will be on WARC bands, RTTY and LOW-BANDS before and after the
  434. contest.
  435.  
  436. VP2E AND PJ7, ANGUILLA AND ST. MAARTEN. ARRL New England Division Vice
  437. Director, Warren/WB1HBB, will be vacationing/operating (with the emphasis
  438. on vacationing) from Anguilla as VP2E/WB1HBB on October 18-20 and from 
  439. St. Maarten as PJ7/WB1HBB from October 21 through October 28th. Look for
  440. him on 14.263 (+/-) at 1230Z and again at 2100Z.  QSL to his home call.
  441.  
  442. VP8CQJ, FALKLAND ISLANDS (UPDATE). As mentioned in OPDX.176, Jon/G8XFT
  443. will be active as VP8CQJ from Mt. Kent from October 18th until
  444. approximately February 20, 1995. Jon has now supplied OPDX with the
  445. following QSL route for VP8CQJ operation: Jon Carp (PLEASE NOTE: Jon -
  446. NOT John), 9 Hawthorn Road, Gatley, SK8 4LX UK. Jon requests cards be
  447. sent DIRECT ONLY as no envelopes will be lodged with a bureau. Cards
  448. submitted without a green stamp or IRCs will be answered via the bureau.
  449.  
  450. XF3, COZUMEL ISLAND, MEXICO. Gene, K7DBV, will operate as XF3/K7DBV from
  451. Cozumel Island (IOTA NA-090) from November 22-29. He plans to be active
  452. in the CQWW DX CW Contest using low power to a wire antenna on all bands
  453. (80-10 meters), primarily CW (with some SSB outside contest). Also, check
  454. the regular IOTA frequencies on both modes. QSLs via CBA.
  455.  
  456. XF4, REVILLA GIGEDOS. An international team headed up by Victor Keller
  457. XE1VIC will activate Socorro Island (NA-30), October 31st through November
  458. 1st (including a multi-single entry in the CQWW/SSB Contest). The team
  459. will be signing XF4M and will be operating on all HF bands/modes including
  460. RTTY and RS-12. The team includes Frank R. Smith AH0W/OH2LVG, Andy 
  461. Chesnokov UA3AB, Igor "Harry" Booklan RA3AUU, Gabriel Valdez XE2Z, Motoaki
  462. Saito JH1EDB, Ed Kritsky NT2X/RV7AA, Pepe Lozano XE2MX and Alfonso Belmar
  463. XE1ILH. This group feels they are the first to ever put on a contest effort
  464. from Revilla Gigedos as well as the first on 30 meters, CW. Actually, the
  465. first ever XF4 operation on 30 meters was XF4CI earlier this year. QSLs

  542. time produce a hetrodyne squeal and that because of the capture effect of
  543. FM a squeal may not always be there?  Helps a controller out to know that
  544. more than one aircraft may be calling him and one may be an emergency or
  545. require expeditious handling (doesn't always occur on 121.5 or 243.0).

  602. I'd love to see a 6m AM net also.  Not because I have an AM only
  603. rig, but because the 6m band can use the activity.  Many of the
  604. contemporary 6m rigs do have the ability to operate AM also (that's
  605. certainly the case for my TS-690), so maybe someone can get something
  606. going here and we can get it reported in QST and CQ also.

  628. I tried to get a 6M AM net going here in the Phoenix area a while back but
  629. couldn't get any interest. My one-owner (me) Heath Sixer is all tuned up and
  630. ready to go. I can't remember the freq of the xtal but like someone else here
  631. said...it really doesn't matter much with the Sixer rcvr.

  633. I also have a one-owner (me again) Knight T-60 that supposedly does 6M AM and
  634. a receiving converter built from the 1963 Handbook for 6M-to-20M that should
  635. still work. At least it did back then.
